Hi! My 10th grader has accommodations approved by the college board for 100% extra time and screen reader. I wanted to enroll her in an SAT prep class but then realized that most of the classes start by taking practice tests. These test during the class would not allow for these accommodations. Some will allow her to come early or take the practice test at home the night before but don't have the screen read function. Does anyone know of a test prep class that specializes in working with students who have approved accommodations? We are in PA the suburbs of Philadelphia. Would love any guidance anyone can offer. Hello. My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 18 months ago. She has experienced level 7 thru 9 pain until we finally enrolled her in online school. With a very structured schedule, her pain is down to a 3/4 most days. We are currently trying to to get her screen for Special Education services (IEP). The school has been most reluctant as she is very smart and can get reasonably good grades while only attending school 2 or so days a week. Looking at what can be asked for as far as accommodations go for someone with Prader Willi. This would be at a community college so commuting from home, not living in a dorm. I know this is a rare disease. Hoping that someone has BTDT and had success. Food seeking is the issue, not academics.

I’m trying to prepare for the school year because my son is entering senior year and turns 18 in early October. First day of school is Aug 21. Our family’s advocate suggested that my son write a letter to the school stating he wants me as his educational spokesperson, to receive all documentation. He should state that he wants me to attend all meetings, be included in all emails, and to receive all documents. It was suggested that this letter should be notarized. I need some assistance. I have a student whose parents are requesting a 5th year of high school. He is socially not ready to graduate next year. He has SDI in SEB and Org. The district is saying since he has the credits to graduate he is required to graduate regardless of what parents think. I agree with parents he isn't ready. Does anyone know of any case law, federal laws, or Washington State laws that might help?

Hello All, I am in MA, but wanted to get your thoughts on my situation. My son just turned 18, we are in the transitional phase. He was in public school K-6 with IEP starting on 4th for SLD in math. The best the public school could do was pull him out for math and he was in a math class with non-verbal kids with much higher needs and he was not learning at age approprate level, so I pulled him out and put him in private catholic all boys. My son is in 11th grade and will be turning 18 in a few months. He would like to graduate with his friends next year, senior year. We have been told he could stay in school until he's 21, and then would be eligible for waivers. If he doesn't stay in his sp ed school (The Concept School), where else could he go? He has high-functioning autism, high anxiety, difficult executive function skills. He is too high functioning for some of the Life skills classes we have seen. What else is available? Thank you.

A family I'm working with purely as a random teacher is in a bind. The student in question is 19 years old and only has an 8th grade education. School was difficult to attend due to behavior issues contributing to lack of attendance and one year of simply not registering. The family admits they dropped the ball, but also lately have begun to suspect a disability. The question is if a possible disability was obvious enough that the school system should have stepped in. I have heard some young people are able to get special education services until their early 20s? What exactly does this mean; is this just for those who need extended time to meet graduation requirements or are vocational and life skills services included in this? Can any person on a IEP get services until age 21 or is it just for certain categories or types of needs?

What is a school's responsibility if due to trauma, a student hadn't attended school on regular basis since 7th grade, currently in 5th year, for transition to adulthood and graduating high-school? Student is currently on homebound again, has attended school off and on over last 5 years but nothing has been done to put into place transitions, career education, or anything. I really didn’t know what forum topic to put this under, but since children with disabilities may become parents with disabilities, who in turn then have their own children, who may have disabilities and IEPs, I put my question here. Is the IEP and 504 process completely focused around the student? What if the parent needs some sort of accommodation in the development or execution of the child’s plan? Maybe it’s written only communication because of a hearing issue or more frequent progress communication due to anxiety?

Hi, we are in NY. My daughter is in 9th grade and will be 15 in a couple months. Was she supposed to have a transition plan in her IEP this year? I thought I just recently read that in NY, a plan is supposed to be in place during the year in which the student turns 15. The only thing her IEP says about the future is that she wants to be a singer . . . That is inaccurate. She will not sing any more because she's gotten in trouble so much for singing when other people did not want her to. She even dropped chorus back in 6th grade.

My 8th grade autistic son has an IEP due to his slow processing speed to give him more time for tests/assignments/time to answer questions etc. Part of his IEP is a social skills class that I really am not happy with - and neither is my son. Not sure if this if your intended purpose for this space. So this is sort of a test and for real... Trying to find out more about grade 13&14/Transition programs for a student with ID/slow processing and autism and adhd. FYI-The student works 3 hrs a week as a support server at a restaurant washing barware, serves water, dinner plates, cleans up, etc. The student needs some employment support and some reminders/check-ins to complete tasks. Did you focus on Daily Life Skills/Independence, academics, pre-employability skills, vocation training, social skills, self-advocacy? What HS program/school did you like or not like?
