IEP and 504 Issues and Questions

In a previous ARD meeting I requested Tier intervention for math. It was not approved because they stated that they only do Tier intervention for reading. I did not make that request (directly) in writing but, I did during the meeting. Since our next meeting is coming up and I had not gotten a PWN, I sent an email inquiring about it. They called and left a voice mail indicating that we will talk about it at the meeting. With all of this being new to me, I thought if you requested some service and it was rejected or not approved, a PWN was due. Or did I make a technical error by not putting it in writing?

Setting Choice A is not working. It's a little off the traditional, so the regular public school system is being looked at, questions asked, etc. This also means child hasn't been attending any sort of school for a few weeks. Getting the right placement is so important, but when would truancy possibly set in?

The school psychologist is the one who did all the testing on our student. in the IEP She says that she will spend a half hour twice a month helping her. In the first IEP meeting the district representative made a point of saying that school psychologist time is an extremely valuable asset that the District is committing to the student. So we just had our very first IEP meeting. the district allocated one hour! I thought the IEP committee together would develop our student’s IEP, but what happened was someone from the district we never met before came in with a premade IEP. Hello! I have been doing research to try to figure out how to inform/educate my son’s teachers that reading his texts out loud is how he understands the material. My son is a junior in high school. Unfortunately, he has three classes where students are expected to read silently for most of a 90-minute class period (As a retired English teacher of 25 years, don’t even get me started on my thoughts on this matter. I rarely asked students to read silently in class without a specific reason and/or audio support.) I had this client many moons ago. She had several kids with IEPs. She was very difficult to deal with, to say the least. Then, with one of her kids, we went to mediation with the IU (IUs are a PA thing) and we got EVERYTHING she asked for. Cool. If a child does not have an IEP but was told the school is drafting one, can a child with behavior issues be denied to go on a field trip with the rest of his kindergarten class?

An IEP was prepared in private by people who don’t know our student and then presented as a done deal at the IEP meeting which involved parents, teacher, bilingual special Ed teacher. Thanks to coaching from this forum we requested an advanced copy of any documents the district planned to bring. We gave brought careful written feedback to hand out to each person at the meeting. Mn- If we talk to another school district about transferring our child to them, will they go back and talk to our current school district? Is transportation covered? They have IEP with transportation currently. We are considering transferring our child to another school district due the school not meeting our child's learning and disability needs (mainly due to them not wanting to meet them as they are known for not accepting kids with special needs). I'm hoping someone has had some experience that might be helpful. My son had an IEP, and was doing well and was transitioned to a 504. His diagnosis are DMDD (mood d/o) and ADHD. His original IEP had more to do with his mood dysregulation than his ADHD, though there were related accommodations. He is currently in a cyber charter, and is really struggling with executive function related tasks. Especially getting assignments in. I am requesting an evaluation to reconsider transitioning to an IEP, but am wondering if anyone has any experience, tips, thoughts on the best way forward? Thanks!

Mu child is under an evaluation request. I believe the 60d ends today or tomorrow. School just sent me a request for parent input. I need more time than a few hours to write a thoughtful response to be included. Is my timeline impacted by providing input after day 60?

What might be an underlying reason(s) for difficulty making inferences? I read the blog article on inference goals, but am curious what “diagnosis” might warrant inference goals? Currently no learning disability diagnosis. Processing speed is just much higher than working memory.

A "life skills-type class" was recently brought up as a possibility for my 8 year old with ID. What kind of life skills do they teach 8 year olds? She takes care of her own hygiene needs and I believe her other skills (except academic skills) are on par or maybe only slightly behind her same age peers. Her academic needs are significant (still considered a pre-reader or maybe beginning K reader, and working on addition/subtraction within 1-10) but she can understand and retain a lot of information that she hears (not all, but a fair amount). I don't know, it seemed to be a very "we don't know what to do with her, so how about this" type of suggestion.

I was in an IEP meeting yesterday for my daughter, it was the most contentious IEP meeting I have ever been in and I am also a practicing school psychologist. The district was not at all interested in having a discussion surrounding my proposal, and rather said they disagree, let's talk about mediation and due process. In my opinion, due process should be an absolute last resort and there should be thorough discussion of the matter prior to getting to that point. I told her I requested prior written notice with an explanation of why my proposal was refused and she said "how could we provide prior notice before the meeting was held?" Hello, I'm working on our parent concerns letter for our meeting next week. This is our first year dealing with an IEP and I'm pretty lost! I do have the IEP Toolkit, but I'm not sure how to word a lot of things. Our son's teacher emailed me a list of questions to complete prior to the meeting. It is pretty thorough, but long. Student has ADHD diagnosis and is 8 years old. Lives in IL. ONE Teacher is sending home messages everyday about all the things the student is doing wrong. School won’t consider a 504 or IEP because “his grades are too good”. Student is constantly trying to teach other students, corrects other students about rule following, having meltdowns when the teacher won’t listen to him during lecture. Good morning, My son is 6 years old and just started Kindergarten in August. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 2 years old and with Autism/ADD within the past 2 years. He is listed as Level 2. He is verbal but is a gestalt language learner. He has been in private OT and Speech for years now. He just started Kindergarten at a public school in West Virginia. I'm sorry for the long post. I'm just at a loss and feel like I'm failing my highschooler if I don't take action. Which will affect their future. My child has Autism but is very high functioning, they are in an EBD (Emotional Behavioral Disorder) classroom that has a teacher that curses the students and feels like it is his job to "turn them into men" by verbally abusing them. My child has been diagnosed with and we have recently updated their IEP to better address their evolving needs. One area where I am struggling is understanding how to effectively monitor progress toward the IEP goals. I remember coming across a template for "About me" to give to a new teacher on the adayinourshoes site. If anyone happens to know where that is could you please share it? I want to start collecting my thoughts on what to give to his teacher this year. I *could* make my own if I absolutely must but I fear it wouldn't be to the point enough. Since we’ve had my son’s Initial IEP, they rejected my request for a 1:1 aide. Since then he’s been having weekly episodes of aggression at school—and he hasn’t been aggressive before. He was recent diagnosed with Autism and ADHD and is minimally verbal. He’s assaulted classmates and a teacher and I truly feel that with a 1:1 aide, it would minimize these meltdowns. Has anyone experienced sudden aggression in their little on? Any advice would be very helpful. I’m just scared that if this continues he would be pulled from the general classroom.
