I live in Bellport NY. I am an the special education teacher in an inclusion Math class for a local high school. My general education co-teacher and I have been a duo for 18 years. My oldest son, Lorenzo, is currently 11. He has severe weakness in spelling( sight word, transferring words ) and handwriting (spacing of letters and words, incorrect formation of letters) . Since first grade, I have tried getting him help. RTI, school evualation, outside evaluation, outside vision evaltuion, and because his scores come out average or above average he never qualifies. My child has been passed along through each grade with huge learning gaps in reading comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. He also still counts on his fingers to do basic math so they added 'may use a calculator to his IEP'. I WOULD LOVE to see him close some of these gaps over the summer. I am drawn to all the ads on FB. "Gain 1 school year of progress this summer." Etc. Has anyone found one of these programs to actually work? They are so expensive. I can't afford to invest if they are frauds. Is there anyway the school district will help pay for them? CSE MEETING tomorrow (Tuesday) ugh!

The loaded question- my son has made progress on reading goals but his iq is 95 and standard score for reading is still about 85. So he’s we came up from 75 to 85 but still more to go to close the gap. For reading we have been using the Wilson reading system and school uses the Sonday system. Written expression on the other hand Is super poor. School does not have a specific program and clearly it shows on the psych eval. I would Love to push harder with the school but of course they can always show “progress” on their Iep goals but per the psych eval it is not even Coming slow to where his potential is. My child has an intellectual disability (iq is 70), anxiety/depression, ADHD, developmental trauma, DMDD, recent TBI, possible FASD (he’s adopted so we have no info on bio family). He’s had an IEP since 3rd grade, BIP since 6th and is currently in 8th grade. He’s always had behavior concerns and medication has been helpful. Unfortunately he’s unable to take ADHD meds at the time due to stabilizing his emotions and mental health. Hello- My daughter is 13yo and this is a transition IEP period. Her team is realizing on community outings that her level of self awareness requires a lot of attention and support. Communication is also for her high on the list of needs and she is a Gestalt processor. On the plus side, her speech team is now sharing what communication needs to looks like when working with her. what I’m feeling is missing is the urgency and danger of her lack of self awareness. Hello, long post, sorry am overwhelmed right now. Problem: My 11 year old sweet boy is a 6th grader and currently in an district online program. who in the past 2 weeks told me he is no longer welcome there due to executive function needs and needs to as of now start at the local brick and mortar against our wishes.
