I’m an advocate. My client currently was denied services the spring of 2022. I am asking for a reevaluation at our next meeting. The mom wants to request a IQ test. Will this potentially hurt our chances for services. Thanks in advance.

My 10 yr. old grandson has dyslexia, and is not reading at grade level. His charter school only teaches reading 3 times a week. He has an IEP. Can he have an accommodation where he would get extra class time in learning to read?

As this session draws to a close, students have been asked to review their grades in the Canvas Platform as well as PowerSchool to check for grades and/or missing assignments. Our student completed and submitted the one missing assignment for the class. When I questioned the grade he received, I was told that his clearly stated "any assignment for which he receives <70% can be resubmitted ". There is no ambiguity in that statement, nor an if, then clause. I was simply informed that the assignment was late, and the accommodation did not apply. I asked, in writing, for an explanation as to how the decision of applicability was determined. We've received nothing. Administ…

I know this forum focuses on the IEP and 504 process in public schools. Some of us aren't going to get our child's needs met through the public schools, either their needs are too specialized or the local school district's strategy to deal with the special education funding crisis is to deny services until parents are bled dry through through advocacy and due process costs. For parents who are receiving compensatory funds or have decided to use their resources on school tuition rather than legal fees, it would be really helpful to have a list of private schools and programs that specialize in educating students with disabilities or independent schools that provide le…

I tend to borrow (copy & paste) but when I copy something, it comes out white on black. I do have a black background with Chrome so I'm sure that where is comes from. Let's say I want to recommend a book on toilet training & want to copy the title & author to the forum, this is what happens: Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism by Maria Wheeler I think this looks sloppy but I can't change it unless I retype it. I think I might just need to be less fussy with how my posts and replies look.

My name is Carol Wilson, and I am a special education teacher deeply concerned about recent trends in educational placement practices for students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD). I am reaching out to advocates to bring attention to a critical issue affecting the well-being and rights of students with EBD nationwide. In recent years, there has been a concerning trend observed across many school districts: the placement of students with EBD in self-contained classrooms designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities without following proper due process procedures. This practice not only violates the rights of these students under the Indivi…

How can I remove the advertising pop-ups that are changing all the time on my screen? Is there a way to have these removed? Like some of our children, we have visual issues as well and these interfere with reading and responding to posts. Thanks!!

A parent of an autistic child sent me an email. Shehas three assessors that need to observe him. Also, she said that the observations can only be one hour and not two hours that the observers want. The woman at the Cambrian School district office in California told her only one observation per month is allowed. Can the district limit the number of observations and time?

I am a parent of a 14 year old who has been "dismissed" from sped, I hired an advocate when he was 5 years old and still consult her today. My topic: I can find so many resources for evaluating advocates and choosing the right one. I find warnings about how advocates can "charge whatever they want" and "have no standard qualifications" but I DON'T find, is the gritty deets on how to offer advocacy services *legally* and in compliance with small business laws? How does an advocate claim the income on taxes? Does an advocate need to file a sole proprietorship or LLC? Is an advocate opening themselves up to potential litigation - should parents be disappointed …

*****Long Read Alert**** Thanks in advance!! My name is Jennifer, I go by Jenn or Jenna. I just became a member Friday! I am optimistic about potentially meeting some local understanding, loving, PITA (Pain in the A**) moms when it comes to our children when they are not in our care. I have 6-year-old twin girls and a 15 yr old son. I honestly want some input, advice, resources, and or feedback on your thoughts on my current situation. Also if anyone knows any other Kindergarten schools in the area that have immediate spaces? Ican’t seem to find not one for my situation. My daughters were going to PAELC. Due to a recent medical diagnosis that affects my vision, cognition, and verbal expression( inability to speak fluently), I submitted a letter to the LEA requesting an extension of the tentative date. The response was that the meeting must be held on or before this date. I understood that it would render them out of compliance with the state, however I believed that having a competent advocate/parent present was tantamount to assuring an adequate IEP. Surprisingly enough, the date for annual review has come and gone. No invitation, according to the state DOE has been generated, and they are effectively out of compliance. No, the IEP doesn't expire …

Ive decided to retain an advocate/attorney after years of IEP's that have failed or failed to be followed. Ii don't know enough to do it myself and I finally figured that out. Right now I need to request an IEP meeting not just to change goals but because the BII in the current IEP hasn't been assigned nd there are so many other things te school is failing to follow through with. My question is...Should I write the IEP request with a parental concern letter and check off the box that I will be bringing an advocate with me or should I have her request the IEP. I don't want to be too aggressive but then again it's my failure to be aggressive that has my son not gettin…

I'm curious as to why the "printable list of [ ] goals" are, in essence, screen shots taken from Redmond Goal Bank and yet it is not referenced. I had hoped I was finding a new resource for a challenging student, but that's not the case.

Sorry, I can't find anywhere else to ask this question. I purchased the toolkit back in Nov 22 and want to reprint it. I found the original in my history but if there are updates am I still able to access the digital boost for upcoming revisions etc? Can I purchase that without buying the toolkit all over again? I'm sorry for asking such a consumer support question here..I dont know the rules yet. Any help would be great. I have a consultation with an advocate today for the first time and I want to have all my ducks-in-a-row and be organized.
