Does This IEP Make Sense? What should I ask for?

Schools love to throw out misinformation (“We don’t do that here,” “We can’t provide that,” “Only medical doctors can diagnose that,” etc.). What’s the worst or most frustrating myth you’ve heard about IEPs or 504s? How did you handle it?

I understand per CSL an Administrator/ LEA/ Sup of SPED must be a direct employee of Trustees of Charter or they can’t be in that position and this would mean IU since they are largest providers of services in county, correct? Had anyone not received parents right for Ferpa, PPRA, IDEA and Rehab Act or the OPT forms yearly? Hi, We received it team meeting notice for our child's IEE meeting. In it we saw some people on there we are not familiar with, one of them was a "SpEd Due Process Specialist" from the school. Has anyone heard of this before? What do they do?? Also, we noticed none of the teachers whose classes our child struggles in are attending. Shouldn't they be included?? Especially as we are going to be talking about how our child's executives function noted in the IEE affects her in those classes at school and accomodations....

My son is 8 in 2nd grade. He gets 2 hours of remedial intervention daily. He is showing no progress and progress monitoring have declined since January. On benchmark testing he is in the 2nd percentile. I'm fed up with the school that it is now March and this has gone on this long. How do you know or decide to modify curriculum? I have lost all of my faith in our school, for just letting this continue for so long. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

My son is in kindergarten and entered the school year with a private diagnosis of a severe phonological speech and language disorder. In the fall, I had him evaluated through the school. As a result, he was given and IEP with 5x30 push-in services for reading and 2x30 C-grid services for speech. As the year has progressed, it has become clear that he has motor planning weaknesses. I pursued a private evaluation, which confirmed an additional diagnosis of motor planning difficulties and an expressive language delay. I Just received the progress monitoring report for this school year so far. Yes, in March. My son was doing poorly but showing minimal growth up until early Jan when the IEP team decided to move his intervention to the self contained yes class for one on one intervention with that teacher. Since then, oral reading fluency, word recognition, and math computation has declined significantly. I requested a change, but the team does not agree with me that there is a problem. He is the 2nd grade, failing at 1st grade intervention in both reading and math. Since everything is data based, shouldn't this data show them that the intervention is not working?! What do I do?

My 8th grader should have had her three year re-evaluation done by December 2024 (we gave consent in Sept 2024). I received a teacher evaluation report and a school psychologist report in mid February. I asked when the meeting to discuss would be and was told someone would "arrange a call". A couple of questions: (A) shouldn't the school have re-done all the tests that were done three years ago and (B) shouldn't there be an official CSE meeting to discuss the test results (that is in addition to the regular annual IEP review meeting, not part of or in lieu of)? Hi everyone, I would appreciate anyone’s advice/suggestions, etc. My 12 year old daughter with an IEP due to her having ADHD started middle school this year. There have been numerous problems all year from her being punished and shamed for behaviors that are symptoms of ADHD (being late, not paying attention, not being prepared for class) to the fact she has failed pretty much all academic classes for both semesters, the only notes on the report card are “needs to try harder” “doesn’t pay attention” “not prepared for class”. The school missed the required triennial eval date. No RR has been given to the parent. It was started but never finished. The parent just realized. Will she be able to get an IEE? Not sure how they can defend no RR in a hearing.

I want to hear this from the advocacy and legal side of the matter. I'm just a teacher. One of my students has a parent who is autistic himself and is affected to the point he can't work, so this puts me in the position of wanting to help extra (not to be patronizing, just saying, I get it, guy probably needs all the reminders he can get). Anyway, he almost always is significantly late to IEP meetings if doesn't forget them altogether. To top it off, this is an online school. We send reminders on all forms. Hi looking for shadow teachers for my nonverbal autism child. irvine CA area.

Very long story, short, at the end of our “parent requested” MDR, LEA decided, despite parents not agreeing, recent behavior was not disability related. While we were standing in office waiting for hard copies of meeting, the school hired EC consultant approached and offered to throw the whole meeting out since it was parent requested. We declined. The last statement in the meeting was from parents asking it be recorded that the LEA making final decisions was also administrator that recommended and was approved an expulsion for the student. Seems very strange, anyone encounter this or have heard of this happening?

He is high functioning, but he has extreme behavioral issues He has been suspended twice for throwing things which hit other students. My question is about Restraint/Seclusion. My grandson has autism and is non verbal. He has eloped twice while in the public school system. The school is refusing to provide 1:1 Para for him. If an OT quits without giving notice, how is this service implemented on the IEP moving forward until the school hires a new OT? Are they required to continue services by outside agency? Does the school keep track of missing services until the school hires OT? Can a family request outside services to be provided and paid for from the school district until someone is hire? My 3rd grade was recently denied an IEP. Stating she does not meet the criteria for SLD. She has been in tier 2 reading support for a couple of years now and just started math support as well. The data shows she is making progress. And I do see her reading progressing and she has a love for it. But the testing discovered (and confirmed my suspicions) that she has slow processing. Hi, My granddaughter has been identified as a student with a learning disabilty. She has not made progreas on her goals in 2 years. Tbey rewrite tbe goals but then add grade level goals. Nothing is skill based. When confrited as to why she isnt meeting the goals. We are being told its behavioral. An fba was ordered. It was found tbat she avoids things that she isnt confident in. Hense most of her classes. We have asked for intervents and tbey have not been given. What should we do?

I am asking this on the behalf of my sibling who is a general education teacher. She has a student who is very aggressive, mercurial, and is completely unable to keep up with the rest of the class. So, the student has been observed and data is being collected. Here's the thing: this started at the beginning of last school year. Yes, it's been a year and a half of data collection. I have a now 16 yr old disabled non verbal son in a Boston public school. I have denied my sons iep for the past 2 yrs due to my son having food lodge in his throat for 7 plus hours, multiple times, and them having no equipment that was on my son's iep. My question is it legal for the school to call dcf and have them threaten to take my child from me if I do not sign the iep the way the school wants ?

I do not feel like my grandson is being served to suit his needs. He received exceptional learning services because he did not get a good foundation for reading in the first grade. I have two questions. First, we had the initial 3 year reevaluation IEP meeting. My understanding is that your child has a legal right to be retested every 3 years but maybe there are details that I have not been able to find documentation on. I requested testing in math & a complete psychological reevaluation. However, the school psychologist said she needed a valid reason why I wanted those tests & then she said she needed to know how that testing would benefit my child. I know these meetings are more like a poker game than an actual meeting to agree on accommodations or tests needed for your child & that the county's priority is saving money. It saves them…

I have a quick question. If I wanted to see the actual BASC questions and answers, is the following true? The only thing I would like to point out is that if you are provided a copy of the questions, then it could make this tool invalid to use for future evaluations. My son started Kindergarten with an IEP for Developmental Delay. He received OT, Speech, PT, and special instruction in reading (all weekly). Hello, I'm not sure if this is allowed but I need help rewriting IEP goals for my daughter and in return, I am happy to provide help with interpreting neuropsych or school psych testing. It's a somewhat tricky situation in part because she's at a public Charter school. I do not want to hire an advocate nor can we afford one as we recently paid a $5k retainer for one and it was a disaster. I have a lot of background knowledge and just want someone (who isn't so emotionally involved 😉 to help me rewrite goals and give tips for dealing with a sped director who keeps trying to take my daughter off an IEP and reduce her goals and instructional time.
